2021 Summer Field Courses

This summer, we are endeavouring to provide on-site, immersive, marine sciences field experiences at the third- and fourth-year undergraduate level (completed your second and/or third undergraduate year).

We are currently evaluating the possibility of opening BMSC this summer for a limited in-person course offering. We hope to offer a field experience for those requiring it as part of their degree program before graduation. Field School Safety Plans for in-person courses have been submitted to our member universities (UVic, UBC, SFU, UAlberta, UCalgary), and we await their decision as to whether they will approve our proposal.

We are aiming to offer a bundle of two field courses for a bubble of 22 students, in one block only (July and August). The 6-week course is a double credit course, so students who complete the program will earn the credit equivalent of completing three 1-semester courses at their home university.

Themed Program: Understanding and Conserving Marine Ecosystems

Date Block Name Duration
Jun 28, 2021 - Aug 6, 2021 1 Marine Ecology 6 weeks View Details
Aug 9, 2021 - Aug 27, 2021 1 Conservation Biology 3 weeks View Details

**Until our application forms are available, course titles and descriptions are subject to change**

As this is a themed program, rather than individual, single course offerings, students will be required to take both courses to be considered for acceptance (in order to minimize turnover and travel to and from BMSC in light of Covid-19 precautions). The application process will be carefully designed to be inclusive given the limited offering. The competitive scholarships from our endowment will be open for all member university applicants to offset cost of BMSC Fees.

Because you, as students, will require home institution approval to register, we are in the process of evaluating our safety plan with each university, which will follow BC Health guidelines, in addition to our own hazard assessment and control programs for COVID-19 in Bamfield.

We remain realistic about the risks given the ever changing landscape of the COVID-19 pandemic, and if necessary, will shift to online delivery of these courses (with highly significant reduction in fees) if we are unable to meet the approval of the Province of British Columbia and/or our five member universities.
