Our IT Systems office provides network communication, scientific computing facilities, computer and AV equipment in support of education and research at BMSC.
Did you drop your phone overboard?
Ken Hawkins, our Systems Administrator offers technical support to non-BMSC equipment, where such support does not interfere with BMSC operations or workloads.

Wireless services are inherently insecure, and BMSC assumes no responsibility for any harm or loss incurred by the use of this service. Where security is an issue, IT can assist you to connect with an Ethernet cable.
- Wifi hotspots throughout campus
- Wired outlets available in most labs and offices
Guests should be aware that our service is VERY slow and they are to avoid relying on it for video conferencing or streaming.
Internet service is provided as a courtesy and BMSC does not guarantee performance or availability. Service may also be interrupted without warning to ensure BMSC core operations are not disrupted.
Moodle at BMSC is the primary channel through which instructors deliver course materials, and students submit assignments for marking.
Students access instructor-supplied materials via the web server at:
You will need to visit this site, and go to the Log in link to create a new account. After your account has been created, you will need to obtain a “Course Key” from either the UP staff or your instructor. Go to Courses>”course name” area, and then enrol in the course. You will then be able to download the required materials.
The BMSC Moodle server allows you to download and upload files from any modern standards-based browser (which excludes Internet Explorer, unfortunately – it might work, but no promises). You may only transfer files to/from the course areas for which you are enrolled.
The following software and tools are available on BMSC computers:
- Windows 7
- Office 2013
- R statistical analysis
- GIMP, a full-featured image editing application
- R.A.S.S. GIS suite
- Seabird Data Processing
- ImageJ image analyzer
- Chrome and Firefox Browsers
- Movie Maker for video editing

- A/V equipment such as projectors, screens and audio systems are available for use (portable kits are available in classrooms without fixed installations).
