The W. Garfield Weston Foundation is a Canadian charitable foundation committed to making grants in Canada for the benefit of Canadians. This foundation is supported by an endowment from the extended Weston family, with the majority of the funds being directed to specific organizations in the fields of education and environment. These bursary funds are distributed to us through the Vancouver Foundation and are to support classes of school aged children up to grade 8 from BC or Alberta, to attend BMSC. The stipend is intended to allow students and teachers from under-served schools, the opportunity to experience and understand Canada’s Marine environment through field trips, boat excursions on the ocean and science experiments in hopes that the students will be excited to learn more about their country, the oceans and marine biology.
Oceans of Art is a fund raising collaboration between Art and Science. Artists inspired at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre have contributed work for sale, and non-profit gallery proceeds provide bursaries for schools to participate in BMSC’s Education Program. The pieces of art were professionally mounted and framed and hang in various places of public display around the campus. You can request any piece of art and make it the centerpiece of a fund-raising event hosted by your class or school, the proceeds of which go toward your fees incurred at BMSC in conjunction with a planned field trip.
Teachers of students requiring financial assistance are invited to contact the Field Trip Program for further information. Participating classes are asked to please acknowledge the contributing artist in a local press release.
The proceeds of artwork sold from the Oceans of Arts Gallery go towards the BMSC Education Program’s Bursary Fund.
Alternatively, to assist entire classes with their BMSC field trip fundraising efforts, a piece of Oceans of Art work can be donated to them to use for a fundraising activity. Participating classes are asked to please acknowledge the contributing artist in a local press release.

The BMSC Education Bursary is primarily funded with the donations received from BMSC station tours given to the general public during the summer months as well at the proceeds generated from the BMSC souvenir shop.
Teachers seeking BMSC Education Bursaries are invited to contact the Field Trip Program outlining their financial need.
