BMSC 2020 Summer courses update re: COVID-19
Based on recent information from the Canadian government and following a recent British Columbia public health order related to COVID-19, we have decided to cancel all Summer courses at BMSC for this summer.
This decision is not made lightly, and is based on recommendations from the Canadian government, British Columbia public health orders and guidance from our Member Universities relating to the unprecedented global pandemic that we all are facing together. Furthermore, this decision will help mitigate risk to the population of our small community of Bamfield which, due to its remote location, does not have the health care resources to support a large-scale health care crisis.
Below please find details relating to our initiatives for alternate summer opportunities through BMSC.
Online Learning Experiences
While BMSC remains operational with essential staff, we are exploring opportunities to provide new spring/summer course additions offered via online teaching and learning to provide more students with the opportunity to continue progressing through their programs during these times.
BMSC Online Summer Courses (University Credit)
- As our students shift to remote learning for the foreseeable future, BMSC is exploring the possibility of holding a few select online credit courses later in the summer (likely in July and August).
- We intend to provide students with opportunities to experience the life-changing environment of Barkley Sound from home, with live-streaming and online content using a combination of real-time and asynchronous interactions with instructors and tutorial assistants. These courses would aim to capture many of the learning outcomes typical of regular summer BMSC courses but would take place remotely, with a minimal BMSC fee.
- Classes will focus on the unique biology and culture of the region around BMSC, and would include opportunities to engage with real research questions, engage in community-based learning, and offer daily opportunities to engage with passionate and skilled faculty. Potential course topics may include conservation and biodiversity, coastal ecology, literature, and environmental law. We invite you to fill out the survey below to help us shape these courses to best suit your specific needs as a student studying remotely. We will have updates on these courses and registration options in the near future. Please stay tuned!
BMSC Online Summer Seminar Series
- In support of our vision to create an open, collaborative and approachable community of scientists at BMSC, we are excited to announce that we will be transporting our popular summer seminar series to a free online format this summer. Historically, BMSC Seminars have been a great opportunity for on-site BMSC students, staff and researchers to learn from experts in our community about the new discoveries being made in various fields of marine science. We will send you information about the summer seminar series and instructions on how to join these talks in the near future.
