Overview: The object of this course is to learn how to undertake an independent research project in your field of interest. Working independently or in pairs, you will conduct literature reviews, present your research proposal, design and implement your own research project, analyze the data you collect, present your results in a symposium setting, and communicate your findings in a written report. You will design your project to take advantage of laboratory and/or field opportunities at BMSC with mentorship from faculty, resident researchers, and staff. This course will be conducted in conjunction with the Applied Data Analysis in Marine Sciences course to supplement the experimental design and analysis aspects of your independent research projects.
Research and Practical Skills: You will learn how to conduct research starting from the formulation of a scientific question, development of hypotheses and alternative hypotheses, experimental design, investigation of methodologies and equipment, understand the relevant background in peer-reviewed literature, through to writing and presenting your research in a variety of communication strategies.
