Visiting Teaching Opportunity – Marine Terrestrial Interactions
Location: Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre
Come teach exceptional students in a hands-on coastal learning environment. Take advantage of a fleet of boats, an extensive flow-through seawater system, helpful support staff, and unparalleled access to diverse coastal habitats.
We are looking for an instructor to teach Marine Terrestrial Interactions (June 15 – July 24, 2020). Our Summer Semester courses are immersive, requiring intense commitment from students, TA’s, and Instructors.
|Educational programs focus on marine and coastal environments, and include short programs for middle and high school students, multi-week courses for undergraduate and graduate credit, and multi-day workshops. BMSC has been the field station for award-winning teaching and world-class researchers for decades. BMSC is an important member of the local community of Bamfield and works collaboratively with the Huu-ay-aht First Nations, the Alberni-Clayoquot regional district, the RCMP and the Coastguard.
Our Summer Courses inspire investigation, promote critical thinking, and offer opportunities for independent research. Courses run in 3 or 6 week blocks. Classes are scheduled from Monday to Friday, with some work expected from students over the weekend.
The course will introduce broad topics in landscape, community, and food web ecology, possibly incorporating specific sections on salmon streams, coastal marine environments, and salmon hatchery/resource management. Field trips and experiments may include topics such as physical (abiotic) atmosphere, ocean and land processes that shape coastal communities such as wind, waves, and currents, exploration of the processes that structure biodiversity of intertidal zones, followed up by analysis, write-up and presentation of the final student projects, with the data collected via a multi-day field trips to the local islands are forests.
