MSc or PhD opportunity: Biology of hydrothermal vent hairy snails (Alviniconcha)

Location: Memorial University, Newfoundland

Date Posted: 07-Feb-20

Dr. Amanda Bates and Dr. Suzanne Dufour at Memorial University in St John’s Newfoundland seek a positive and motivated graduate student (MSc or PhD) to advance understanding of the biology of hydrothermal vent hairy snails (Alviniconcha) collected from locations in the Mariana Back-arc.

The project focus will be on describing the reproductive biology of Alvinoconcha, as well as to quantify the morphological responses of the gill and bacteriocytes across vents with different hydrothermal fluid chemistry.

We seek applicants with a strong academic background, excellent writing and communication skills, an interest in laboratory-based microscopic investigations, and a passion for animal-microbial symbiosis. The successful candidate will be organized, creative, and excited about working in a collaborative group environment.

We also strongly encourage candidates of groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity to apply.

Please contact us (Dr. Amanda Bates and Dr. Suzanne Dufour) with inquiries.
